You downloaded a Windows program, double-clicked the .exe, and nothing happened. Here's why, and the ways to run it on your Mac.

A Mac can't run an .exe file on its own: .exe files are Windows programs, and macOS doesn't run them. You need something that runs Windows software. CrossDriver App opens the .exe directly on your Mac, with no virtual machine and no Windows license. The other options are a virtual machine with Windows installed, or Boot Camp on older Intel Macs.
| Windows license | Macs with M1–M4 | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| CrossDriver App | Not needed | Yes | Using a few Windows apps like Mac apps |
| Virtual machine (Parallels Desktop, UTM) | Needed | Yes, with the Arm version of Windows 11 | Running all of Windows, side by side |
| Boot Camp | Needed | No, Intel Macs only | Older Intel Macs, restarting into Windows |
| Windows in the cloud (Windows 365) | Subscription | Yes, over the internet | Companies that already use it |
Most Windows desktop programs run: office and business software such as Microsoft Office, Access, Project, Visio and QuickBooks Desktop, tools like 7-Zip and Notepad++, and many older apps that never had a Mac version. Popular apps have a ready-made setup in the Setup Center. Some games run too, but game support varies by title.
Not everything works yet: programs that install their own Windows drivers, and games with kernel-level anti-cheat, generally don't. The quickest way to find out is to try your program with the free edition.
Not by itself. macOS can't run Windows programs. With CrossDriver App installed, you can double-click an .exe and it opens on your Mac.
Install CrossDriver App, then double-click the .exe or drag it onto the CrossDriver App window. It works the same on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini.
Yes. CrossDriver App is free for personal use and doesn't need a Windows license. You only need the program you want to run and its own license, if it has one.
Yes, with CrossDriver App or a virtual machine. Boot Camp isn't available on Macs with Apple silicon.
Treat it like any program you install: a Windows program runs as your user and can read and change the files you can. Only open programs from sources you trust. CrossDriver App keeps each set of programs in its own environment, so they don't interfere with each other.
